I have not worked for four years. Will companies still accept me for an entry level job?

3

I'm an commerce graduate who took tending (for 3 yrs). I took up tending so that I could join my parents in the US, whom I have not seen for 13years already, through an employment visa. Unfortunately US shut down its hiring for foreign. Now, I am finding a job in line with my commerce degree so that I could support for myself and go on with my career. I am just feeling nervous that companies might not offer me an access-level position because of me not being able to work for the past 4years. I am 27years ancient.

In Commerce things change drastically over night……..completely in 3 years………..consider this……….There are thousand and thousands of talented, experience people on the road due to the economy…the competition for any job is extreme. …people will do anything for much less just to feed their kids……..I don’t expect it to get any better before 2015……

A few questions you may wish to consider answering in an update.

You are an commerce graduate – I review commerce graduate CV’s every day and yes it is extremely hard in the UK to utilise these skills as we have small commerce in the UK! What did you want to specialise in?

You did 3 years tending – are you a qualified nurse? Why do you not want to use these skills in an age where there is a massive shortage is excellent feature tending? national health or private or bank tending?

You say you have been unemployed for 4 years. At 27 after all this education – have you had 4 years to be employed beyond ‘access level’?

If you have not seen your parents for 13 years, this is a worry and is the most outstanding part of your thought, you would have been 14 years ancient when you last saw them. Is this the real issue? An air ticket to the states can be as small as a months worth of bar work for a visit – you don’t need to impress or copious cash – surely they should go out of their way to indulge YOU.

An commerce degree may get you in with a motor manufacturer such as Nissan or VWG but will not get you into a dealership as a Technician. Other industries may be interested but this is a very well loved subject and your competition will include other nationalities as there is a heavy influence on commerce in India as they have superb learning facilities. You could off shore commerce at access level e.g in the north there are a lot of oil rigs – that use a bounty of talented engineers.

Why not try the Army?

This may not answer your direct question, but I believe it is excellent advice for anyone who is looking for a job. One thing that job seekers seem not to know or forget is that all employers are looking for a certain type of worker. They are looking for an honest, hard working, positively intelligent and dependable employee. They are also looking for a person who can get along with the public and other employees. If you don’t have every one of those characteristics, your chances are slim and none to get and hang onto a job.

Always reckon about who you want to hire if you were looking for an employee. Would you hire you? Look at physically at the way you walk, talk, dress and even write. (Have someone proofread your application before turning it in. Fill it out in pencil first, then erase and use ink) Are you a dependable employee? If you were to be questioned that question, how would you answer? Would you want you out on the firing line talking to customers? Why? You would want the best person talking to your customers, wouldn’t you? Are you the best person? Why?

Your wants, needs and desires are not really vital to a business owner. Stop thinking about physically and start thinking about how you could improve the business you want to work for. Place physically in the driver’s seat and let the interviewer know who you are and what you can do for them. Somehow let them know that you are their best choice from all the others that are applying for the job.

If you really want to get hired, you should be camping out at the nearest library reading every job hunting book you can get your hands on. These books are a fantastic help. Read them several times. It has been said that getting the job is harder than the job itself—so you need to be PREPARED.
